Help Free Dana Beal

(anyone here at Cannaworld, who would like to donate any beans or help support a charity for Dana Beal, let us know!)

There have been many groups in the history of American protest who have made great strides for social justice, but a rarefied few have left a mark an indelible as the Youth International Party(Yippies). A group of anti-Vietnam War activist who used irony, humor, intelligence, and their own blinding belief in peace and love to challenge the establishment on the streets, in the courts, and the halls of Congress itself.

Names like Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Nancy Kurshan, Paul Krassner, Allen Ginsberg, Phil Ochs, and Judy Collins are all iconic.

A name you might not know, however, is that of Dana Beal. In 1972 Dana founded then edited the Yipster Times (later to become Overthrow) which operated until 1979. He wasn?t in Chicago in 1968 where Hoffman and Rubin passed into legend for being stomped and then persecuted as part of the Chicago Seven. Beal was already underground hiding from the authorities for revolutionary activates in opposition to the Vietnam War, in support of individual rights, and support of Marijuana legalization. He continues to fight for your rights to this day being the primary organizer behind the World Wide Marijuana March through the organization Cures Not Wars. A few days ago in Coles County Illinois, Dana Beal was arrested by the authorities. A man who has sacrificed so much of his life for the civil rights of his fellow human beings now languishes in a rural jail and he needs your help this time.

Dana Beal has been involved in every major social justice movement since his introduction to radical politics in the early 1960?s. In 1963 during a left-wing political rally he stated that should a tyrant ever become President of the United States he should be shot. While that seems like a pretty reasonable assertion to anyone he was informed on and there after whenever a sitting President or candidate came to New York City his whereabouts and activities were monitored and verified by the Secret Service. In 1967 before the 1968 Democratic Convention where the Yippies would become famous, Dana was charged with trying to sell acid to an undercover cop. Beal skipped out on the rap remaining on the run with help from various activist around the country including members of the Weather Underground only to later be apprehended by authorities in Wisconsin. He served a year in prison.

Oral Pot Preparation Effective For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Journal Report

Berlin, Germany: Oral administration of synthetic THC capsules (dronabinol) mitigates symptoms in patients with treatment-resistance obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), according to a pair of case studies published in the April issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Investigators at Berlin's University of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, reported two cases of OCD patients augmenting their treatment regimens with oral THC.

For the first patient, a 38-year-old female, dronabinol administration three times daily significantly decreased OCD symptoms within ten days. For the second patient, a 36-year-old male, dronabinol treatment twice daily significantly decreased symptoms of OCD within two weeks.

Neither patient reported any physical or mental health side-effects from dronabinol.

Prior to their use of oral THC, both patients had been unresponsive to standard treatment medications.

For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director, at: paul@norml.org. Full text of the case study, “Improvement in refractory obsessive compulsive disorder with dronabinol,” appears online in the American Journal of Psychiatry at: http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/165/4/536.

SPIFFY SOCIETY - JAMAICA CONSIDERS CALLS TO DECRIMINALISE USE OF GANJA

Jamaica
-------
Drugs Law Reform Could Free Courts Logjam - But The Issues Are Not That Simple

Rastafarian priest Headley Samuel holds up a stem of pungent marijuana and reveals his recipe for bliss: "Fast, breakfast, drink aloe vera and smoke ganja." His routine, which he says takes him to "the highest spiritual realm", makes him a lawbreaker. But soon that may change. Jamaica, the largest producer of cannabis in the Caribbean, is considering decriminalising use of the drug.

A seven-member government commission has examined possible reforms of the nation's anti-drug laws, which some police complain clog up courts and jails with marijuana-related cases.

Possession of ganja, as it is known in Jamaica, can be punished with imprisonment. Some Jamaicans consider that disproportionate and a recent newspaper poll revealed that Jamaicans rate smoking above drinking as a way to wind down.

It is widely used, with fumes wafting from Kingston building sites and across bars. Quantities are openly for sale in parts of downtown Kingston for as little as 35p for a spliff.

A previous government-appointed ganja commission proposed decriminalisation in 2003. That was never acted upon because the government feared it would cause the withdrawal of their country's US anti-drug certification and trigger economic sanctions.

The new Jamaican Labour party government, which took power last year, has decided to think again.

"We are happy to know this has not been forgotten," said Paul Burke, president of the National Alliance for the Legalisation of Ganja. "It would release the police from the bind of an unjust and an unenforceable law.

"If you go to a football match in Jamaica, it is smoked with impunity. Ganja should be allowed to be smoked in people's private residences and everybody should be allowed a certain amount and should be allowed to grow some stems in their own area."

The drug is revered by Rastafarians who believe a verse in Psalms which says God "causeth the grass to grow for cattle, and the herb for the service of man" gives them the right to defy the law. But thousands more use it as a recreational drug and cultivation has increased following the recent crackdown on cocaine trafficking.

Listen Up, Canadians: Bill C-26 Means Mandatory Minimum Prison Sentences for Pot

The Conservative Government of Canada is stepping up a huge propaganda campaign to pass Bill C-26, mandatory minimum prison sentences for marijuana

Bill C-26 takes a page from American policy by imposing mandatory minimums and harsher penalties for drug crimes. A person could be jailed for at least 6 months for the crime of growing as little as one marijuana plant, were this legislation to pass. We have seen how badly the drug war has failed in America, so why adopt a similar approach? Why should we move for an approach in favour of more imprisonment?

Bill C-26 was last debated in the House of Commons on February 4, 2008. It proposes minimum penalties for the production, possession, trafficking and importing/exporting of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines and other drugs.

Was Moses high on Mount Sinai?

Study suggests Israelites may have eaten hallucinogenics, but scholars scoff

JERUSALEM - When Moses brought the Ten Commandments down from Mount Sinai, he may have been high on a hallucinogenic plant, according to a new study by an Israeli psychology professor.

Writing in the British philosophy journal Time and Mind, Benny Shanon of Jerusalem’s Hebrew University said two plants in the Sinai desert contain the same psychoactive molecules as those found in plants from which the powerful Amazonian hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca is prepared.

The thunder, lightning and blaring of a trumpet which the Book of Exodus says emanated from Mount Sinai could just have been the imaginings of a people in an “altered state of awareness,” Shanon hypothesized.
